May tender memories soften your grief,
May fond recollection bring you relief,
And may you find comfort and peace in the thought
Of the joy that knowing your loved one brought
For time and space can never divide
Or keep your loved one from your side
When memory paints in colors true
The happy hours that belonged to you.
We will not forget him......for he is with us still.

50 years of true friendship from McGill to Brockville, with hundreds of fabulous adventures (Runnin' Late and Midnight Special) in between. You were and always will be my "big brother", a guy I respected and loved. I appreciated your guidance and "lead by example" attitude. I always admired your close and wonderful relationship with your loving gal Kathy. You were bigger than life but in your own quiet way. Thanks for all the great memories---always in my heart.
Keep on truckin', buddy!

Bryan was born in Saskatchewan, so this may explain his love for beautiful sunsets, open spaces and animals and birds in their natural environment. Crowds were not his favourite thing (he preferred sitting on the end of the aisle in many venues), but he thoroughly enjoyed the people he met and charmed them all with his endearing wit and quick one-liners. Bryan was about as authentic a person as you might wish to meet. No pretenses. No phoniness. Who you met was the real Bryan.
His upbringing in Canada’s Bible belt by a mother and father of Scottish descent molded his character. Honesty was evidenced in all his dealings. He went out of his way, without fanfare, to help people. There was no thought of sacrifice or public display. He just did what he felt was needed and best, quietly.
Bryan’s love of photography began very simply. During high school years he worked in a pharmacy selling cameras and equipment. This led to building a dark room in the family house with the aid of his father. Hundreds of hours were spent in that basement room, leading to work with one of Montreal’s leading photography studios. His blue eyes would see things in his travels that no one else could see and he captured it. The search for the perfect shot drove him to excel and thousands and thousands of images were recorded, especially as he and Kathy travelled so extensively in retirement years.
His love of the outdoors and physical fitness lead to lasting friendships with students and colleagues, many of these folk travelled miles to come and see Bryan during his last few weeks. He was thrilled to re-unite with them. I don’t think there was a sport Bryan didn’t love and excel in over the years and his teaching skills won many hearts. His post graduate studies at McGill enlarged his knowledge base and his business understanding. This gave way to a great coaching career and he interacted with everyone as if they were the only people of importance.
During the last weeks Bryan returned to his roots, and as he explained it, he made his peace with the Lord. All throughout this terrible ordeal, he remained calm and at peace. There was ample time to sort out his life, re-unit with incredible friends and family, supported by Kathy, his extra-ordinary soul-mate. He often stated he would never have been able to face these times without her. She, like Bryan, is a one-of-a-kind person. They were an example of everything a couple should be.
Bryan was loved and will be missed by so very many people, especially Kathy and me. Oh, did I mention? Maybe you already guessed. Bryan is my brother. Brotherly love has taken on a whole new depth of meaning. I miss him terribly, but I will see him again.

Bryan was a very special teacher in my wayward high school days. I think my folks counted on him to keep an eye on me. He is a BIG reason that I became a teacher in the outdoors. We hiked, skied, snowshoes, canoed, rock climbed, laughed and learned together. He was a kind, funny, respectful man. A handful of us spent a lot of time in his office feeling worthwhile and special.
And then we met Kathy....this amazing woman who became the light of his Life. They were so good together! Here we are at my 50th! I was thrilled he and Kathy came.

"Mr. Gorrie" taught me more about navigating life in his tiny John Rennie office, including how to make the very best cup of hot chocolate on the planet, than any other teacher in my educational journey. He was a true Zen master and my clearest, and dearest, remembrance of my high school experience. I'm so very sorry that this special, inspirational soul has departed. My sincerest condolences to all Bryan's friends and family - he had a huge, positive impact on my life, for which I am truly thankful.

We only spent time with Bryan a hand full of occasions, yet remember each time so vividly. That is because Bryan was a good listener, he was fully present when he was with you. So, dinner at your house, or the chance meeting in Walmart where Bryan convinced us to buy these great camping chairs are such fond memories. He was such an inspiration, as a pilot, photographer, paddler, hiker, and most importantly as a positive, understanding, loving man. After every time we saw Bryan, we were inspired to live fuller, more positive lives. We are very grateful to have known Bryan, he will be missed.
Hugs and love to you Kathy xoxo

The summary of Bryan says it all. A man of many talents, skills and hobbies but most of all a man who cared for his family, cultivated his relationships carefully and gave his wife, Kathy, love, kindness and support in all that she did. The essence of all that he was will remain behind with all of us who were lucky enough to be in his orbit.

Kathy,
I’m so saddened to hear, such a loss to you, you family and to all. Bryan was a tremendous influence, from the time I was 16, so long ago. He shaped my career through modelling and encouragement. And he introduced me to you. Always quietly guiding.

Since meeting Bryan I have always respected his quiet confidence and reassuring wisdom. His calmness was welcoming and his conversations meaningful. I always felt an authenticity in his interest in my life, which made it easy to reciprocate.
He was always willing to lend a helping hand around our house, like the time he climbed up on our roof to remove an antenna while we were away, because he knew of my fear of heights. He did this despite knowing that Kath may not have approved.
Bryan was a watchful site supervisor from his balcony when I was working across the street. I hope now he will be inspecting my work wherever I am.
He and Kathy entertained Shelbi and I for many game nights. These are times that we cherish.
He was a friend to our dog Hemmy, who loved Bryan's company on long walks.
Although he was sick, his excitement was palpable during the photoshoot he did for our daughter when she was born. Although she won't remember, we will be sure Cora knows that Bryan loved her.
I will think of Bryan whenever we go for ice cream, and I will be sure to give the bottom of my cone to Hemmy, because I know Bryan would want him to have it.

For the first 23 years of my life, Bryan was my uncle. A very special uncle who we spent easters with, played water sports with, went on long Sable walks with and who made the best pancake breakfasts. He was someone who I always looked forward to seeing on our many family trips to Montreal each year. But over the last 5 years of my life, Bryan became so much more than just a great uncle, he became a very dear friend to Jamie and I. I am so lucky to have had the chance to have Bryan (and Kath!) in my every day life, just a 2 minute walk down the road in the wonderful city of Brockville. We enjoyed so much everyday-life time together. Countless tea and dessert nights, chatting about anything and everything. Board game nights full of laughter. Hemmy drop offs and pick ups. Impromptu photo shoots. An extra set of hands to help us with our never ending home renovations, including building a fence and removing an antenna off of our very high roof. Travel advice. People (and dog!) watching. Ice cream eating. Camping gear lending. And recently, very cherished Cora snuggles. Those are the things I will miss the most. The small, normal moments we would share together.
I loved Bryan so very much, and will be forever grateful that I got the chance to know him the way that I did.
And if Hemmy had thumbs, I know he would want to say that he loved Bryan like a grandpa. He loved all of the long walks and sleep overs they had. He appreciated all the cookies and belly rubs and last bites of icecream cones Bryan gave him. Hemmy was so happy he got to go visit Bryan one last time at the hospital and snuggle right in bed (which Kathy rarely allows!!!) and tell Bryan how much he meant to him.

Bryan Gorrie was a wonderful human being. He cared so much for others; he saw things from the other’s point of view and was so helpful to everyone in doing so. And that sense of humour! He always had a smile on his face and a quick one liner to spread laughter in the world. Most importantly, he loved Kathy truly and deeply, and as a loving couple they were such an inspiration to us. Fly high and be free Bryan. Always in our hearts.

Dear Kathy and family,
Sending you all big hugs and support during this difficult time. Bryan was such a special person and I will cherish the time we spent together chatting about life and hiking the trails. He was such a good sport for putting up with me chatting his ear off about birds. His spirit lives on in the incredible photos he took, and in the memories he made with family and loved ones. He will be sorely missed by all.
