Ian was an amazing man. Whenever I think of 1000 Islands I instantly think of Ian.
I only just found out he had passed a few months ago. My trips to 1000 Islands won't be the same without Ian.
I will cherish my autographed treasures and ensure future generations get to see the beautiful photos Ian took over the years.

My Remembrance of Ian Coristine
How sad I was to learn of Ian’s death. My first contact with him came years ago, when I happened to see – and become utterly enchanted with – the photographic art in his first book, “The 1000 Islands.” It was enough to inspire me to make the Islands the subject of a travel essay. I contacted Ian, and, though we were strangers, he graciously offered to show me around the islands if I came. As fate would have it, my visit was delayed by some years. When it finally happened, in October 2018, Ian was abroad at his other sanctuary – in the midst of southern European grapevines. So, we never did meet in person. But, I felt that I knew the man through his art. His images of the Islands captivated and inspired me: We both regarded the Thousand Islands as ‘a secret garden,’ a magical place that gives the imagination flight. And, of course, many of Ian’s images are captured from the air, as he took literal flights over the place that he and I both found so irresistible. I was proud to collaborate with Ian by showcasing his images with my travel feature “The Great Inland Archipelago” in the online edition of Artsforum Magazine in fall 2018. His art spoke to me, as it doubtless does to all who see it. I regret that I never met the man behind the pictures, but I’ll long remember him through the legacy of his art.

So sorry to hear of Ian's passing. I 1st found out about Ian in Autumn 2003 when my husband and I took our 1st trip to the 1000 Islands. I found his book on Bolton castle in a gift shop after we had taken a tour. I was inspired by his beautiful photography and began following him on his website. His passion for photography and how much he loved the 1000 Islands gave me the incentive to discover my own passion for photography in Bucks County where I live. I've been following him on Facebook for a number of years and own a number of his books. Having been busy the past few months I didn't realize until now i had not seen him post, so I went to his page to see if he was ok. Was so sad to see a message of his passing in February. What a beautiful life he has lead and I truly enjoyed the videos of the Islands and the home on Europe that looks like he and his wife really enjoyed. Thank you for the inspiration.

My history with Ian goes back to 1969, when energetic, quick talking Anglo-Quebecer arrived in my RacEquip shop in Scarborough. He desperately wanted to buy a Merlyn Formula Ford single seat race car. He was a little short of the funds needed but his enthusiasm won me over and I took his useless, race prepped Austin Healey Sprite in trade with the balance due in a month or so. Long story, shortened up: he went on to be an excellent racing driver competing successfully on tracks in Canada and the US. His passion for racing waned as the inevitable financial burden took its toll. Then after a couple of years, I remember his excited chatter about something called an 'ultralite' and how much fun flying could be. I can still recall a couple of flights with Ian yacking away as he swooped and dived over his beloved 1000 Islands that took my breath away. Prior to 9/11 he took big chances to 'get his shot'. Ian was a perfectionist and his glorious images of the 1000 Islands reflect that intensity. He was a good buddy and could always be counted on to welcome me to his island hideaway. Miss him...

Once upon a time I met Ian at Lower Canada College (year 5) and we became inseparable friends. Playing ball hockey for hours in the neighbour’s driveway in the winter, spending summers together in Maine and Lake Memphremagog, doing what teenagers do, skateboarding, sailing, biking, swimming, chasing girls, getting into mischief…the memories just keep flooding back.
And then racing cars… Weekends up at the house behind Tremblant racetrack with a gang of friends, working hard and playing even harder. Trips across Canada meeting new friends and exciting challenges. Ian’s tenacity and determination inspired us all to do our best and achieve our goals and we rejoiced and confidently matured in all our achievements.
As I think back, there were so many friends in the racing era that I was privileged to get to know, starting with MG Sprite racing to formula ford to formula B. From IRI Racing Team (Ian, Randy and Ian) and Delta Racing Developments there are so many great memories, travelling and experiences. For some fictitious reason we all called each other “Ugly”, and humorously we all responded with meaningless pride.
Moving to Australia, I missed the Thousand Island era and Ian’s later chapters and friends in his life. But I am sure everyone he came in touch with admired his love of life and his ability to achieve his dreams.
My sincere condolences to Ian’s family. We are all saddened, but the fond memories will keep us smiling.

It was with great sadness today that I heard of Ian's passing. My condolences to all the family and friends who I know will miss him terribly. It must be 40 odd years since we last met but the short time, we spent together during the racing years, were so intense that I will never forget them. Ian and I shared a love of airplanes, cars, racing and photography and we would probably done other things together in later years had I not moved out west to Vancouver in 74. But life has a way of reminding us of good times past, just last fall I came across some championship tankards from IRI Formula and Royal Bank Racing Team days which bought those memories flooding back. Fittingly I have recently started digitizing some of my old photos and here are a few, from those days, that I’m sure those who shared those times, like dear Barbie Hill, will remember. Ian was a winner in life not just on the track.

My deepest Sympathy to all the loved ones, family and friends of dear Ian Coristine. I hold a book of cherished memories about Ian in my heart since we first met in our early 20’s...memories throughout the early racing days and then as a member of The Royal Bank Racing Team touring with him as Quebec Formula B Racing Champion. Then, through his novel big screen tv era in Beaconsfield when Ian and Mary found their first home, and I became their primary house and pet sitter which transferred to the home of their dreams in horse country where they went on to become parents to Hayley and Scotty. Ian engaged his family with a legitimate little airport out back of their wonderful home while conducting a full-fledged Challenger flying school on the strip and overhead! Ian always challenged me, be it by accompanying him in his racing car to the edge of the ice (literally) during ice racing, giving me the stick in his glider across the runways of Les Cedres, or flying under bridges waving to ice fishermen in his fully winterized Challenger or, in summer, pulling in on shore to have lunch at the beloved old Willow Inn, having just followed an aerial flight of a family of deer below through the Rigeau mountain forest. My long time family friend Nancy’s children, now adults, still talk about the day Ian flew me over their farm in Ste-Marthe so I could call out to them from the plane window! For weeks after that the 2 year old twins would raise their arms to any Jumbo Jet flying over and scream in delight, “Barbie! Barbie! Barbie!” Yes! Ian brought me Joy, and Joy to a lot of people! And I remember his excitement about Raleigh Island and showing us a video of his newfound passion! Many times we spent at the Island in the early years of renovations and it just got better and better and better! Ian had a knack of seeing the Beauty in everything and that’s what I treasure the most about this remarkably successful Being in everything he ventured into. I was proud to be invited to be God Mother to their son Scott and daughter Hayley was my unofficial God Daughter who as a toddler inspired me to come up with an audio childrens’ book series the whole family had to listen to called “Patricia & Patricia”! I remember one particular walk down to the famous apple orchard when Ian got on his hands and knees to capture a stunning photo of his little daughter “Sally Sunshine” that became a real Blow Up, among other masterpieces, on the wall of their home. Ian loved kindly and when The Islands became his photogenic passion, he often had Scott in tow on their boating expeditions to capture those magical moments that are now immortalized into volumes in several languages. Well, in this Moment in Time, remembering just a glimpse of the wonderful experiences I shared with Ian, and then his family, I see my heart’s book taking form about who I came to name “The Guru of The Thousand Islands”. Although our lives went in different directions and I didn’t see my “oldest friend” for a time, I give my cherished memories of my long time friendship with Ian Coristine a fitting name for his remarkable care and immeasurable talents...“One In A Million”! My only regret is that I didn’t take up Ian’s invitation, for old times sake, to drop by The Island sometime so I would have had a chance to get to know Lyne.
And I have a hunch Ian is waking up to a whole new photojournalistic passion in a newfound ‘Thousand Islands’ of Rainbow Lights and Love called Heaven!
I hear no one who lands on those shores ever wants to look back, yet, like the Rainbows we see with our earthly eyes, the Spirit world is as close as that!
God Bless you “E”, until we all meet again!

Our deepest condolences to Ian's family... we'll always be grateful to Ian for sharing his love of the Thousand islands, a place we came to know and love dearly in 2015. We spent two summers there in our motorhome with our Catalina sailboat in tow and profoundly enjoyed sailing out of Clayton and through the islands and over to the Canadian side. I'll always remember the thrill of navigating through the Wolfe Island Cut over to Ganonoque. I have been sailing all my life, and the T.I. will always be the highlight of my life. Thanks to Ian I can relive the experience over and over in my final years..

To Ian's entire family - my very deepest condolences. I first met Ian when he would come across the River to my marina in Blind Bay in the late 90s. He always bought an 18 pk of Michelob Lite - bring his pics that he had taken and encourage him to sell them. I believe we were one of the first to sell his books on the River- I am blessed that he personally signed all of his collection to me - which I will forever treasure. Such a great loss - but forever blessed with his talent for capturing photos that he loved sharing of our beautiful River
Sincere condolences -

Ian was unique. His many loves defined his persona and fueled his passions: the river, the islands, Seguret, hiking around Europe with his camera, the Tall Ships .. and heading the list was his love for Lyne. We are the beneficiaries of his immense talent and he will be sorely missed. R.IP.

My husband Bryan and I were lucky enough to “cross paths” with Ian several times over the years!
I taught Scotty in Kindergarten in St. Lazare and Mary was one of my wonderful parent volunteers. I got to give “grown up” Scotty a hug just last week when he came to visit his dad!
Bryan met Ian and shared their love of flying when they parked their planes at St. Lazare airport.
When we too fell in love with the 1000 Islands, our landlady gave us a copy of one of Ian’s beautiful books as a welcome gift - that was when we discovered that both Ian and Bryan also had a love and talent for photography.
Recently I met Ian and Lyne in our local grocery store and had the pleasure of getting to know Lyne and catching up in person. Sitting in their beautiful living room overlooking the river, it was obvious to see the love they shared!
My heart is with you all!
Fondly,
Kathy Gorrie

When I told him I lost his photos in a custody battle during my divorce, we both chuckled...I because I could replace the pictures but got to meet him, and he because that was a situation that had not happened to him before!!
