John Allan

Obituary of John Archibald Hood Allan

It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, John A.H. Allan, on Dec. 26, 2020 in Brockville, ON. He was 92. A native of Montreal, Dad grew up in Westmount before the family moved to Baie d'Urfé prior to WWII. He attended Roslyn School, BCS, Macdonald High and finally his beloved McGill University (Class of '51), followed by a long career in Insurance until his retirement and subsequent move to Brockville in the mid-80's. The summers of his early adulthood were spent in Chester NS, working to finance his competitive sailing habit at his Uncle Monty's old Hackmatack Inn. Later, after he married our mother, he spent many happy years sailing, chasing golf balls, and general merrymaking in Magog and Metis Beach, QC. Dad was a lifelong sailor (RStLYC), golfer (RMGC), and avid squash player (MBSC), and extolled the virtues of friendship, loyalty, and honesty, and despite living in Brockville remained in perpetual contact with his many lifelong friends. He leaves behind two of his three sons, Andrew and Geoffrey, and their combined 5 grandchildren Sienna, Elliott, Elsie, William, and Nora. He was predeceased by his son John (2015) and his sister Daphne Lindsay (2005). He is survived by his brother Douglas (Robin) and his wife Lynne, many nieces and nephews, as well as his former wife Jane Trenholme. We wish to extend our sincere thanks to the entire staff of Brockville General Hospital for their excellent care, especially during the Christmas period. A private ceremony at the family plot in Mt. Royal Cemetery will tentatively be held in Spring.
